写真家・塩田正幸の四半世紀にわたって制作した作品群をまとめた写真集『RETINAGAZER』を発刊します。“反射神経”を最大限に追求したスナップ写真で構成された『NPEAKER』や『LIFE HUNTER』などの初期作から、「写ってなくても良い」という言葉に向き合い、内向的な写真実験を試行錯誤した『ケの日ヒョウハク』シリーズ。そして“網膜を凝視する者”という作家の根底にある概念に辿り着いた本書タイトルでもある『RETINAGAZER』など、ジャンルやカテゴリーに捉われず、写真の存在意義に向き合い、問いただしてきた塩田正幸の実験的な活動の記録が綴じられた、まさに”集大成”とも言える一冊。写真143点をまとめた本誌と、ダニエル・アビー、松村正人、石川祥伍という三名による論考を収録した冊子をスリップケースにまとめた構成の作品集となります。

塩田正幸／Masayuki Shioda
1973年埼玉県生まれ、90年代後半より写真家として活動を開始し2000年に個展「NPEAKER」を開催、2002年に同タイトルの初めての写真集を出版。2020年にタカ・イシイギャラリーにて個展「RETINAGAZER」を開催。主な作品集に2005年『LIFE HUNTER』、2008年『ANIMAL SPORTS PUZZLE』など、また自主制作の出版レーベルFLASH BOOKSより作品集を多数発表。2019年創刊の雑誌『Moder—n』には写真家ヨーガン・テラーに密着したドキュメンタリー作品「YAKITORI TELLER」を発表。作家活動と並行し、音楽シーンを中心に活躍しており、坂本慎太郎や折坂悠太、ジム・オルーク、Phewといったミュージシャンたちのジャケットも手掛けている。

Photographer Masayuki Shioda’s new photobook RETINAGAZER compiles his works spanning a quarter-century. It features early series like ‘NPEAKER’ and ‘LIFE HUNTER’—composed of snapshots pursuing maximum reflex—alongside ‘Daily Bleach’ series, where he grappled with the notion that “it doesn’t matter if it’s not captured,” experimenting introspectively. This volume, titled ‘RETINAGAZER’—which also represents the artist’s foundational concept of “the one who stares at the retina”—is a definitive collection. It chronicles Shioda’s experimental activities, unbound by genre or category, as he confronted and questioned the very essence of photography. This collection comprises a main volume featuring 143 photographs, paired with a booklet containing essays by Daniel Abbe, Masato Matsumura, and Shogo Ishikawa, all housed within a slipcase.

Masayuki Shioda
Born in 1973, he began working as a photographer in the late 1990s. He held his solo exhibition “NPEAKER” in 2000 and published his first photobook of the same title in 2002. In 2020, he held the solo exhibition “RETINAGAZER” at Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film. Major publications include “LIFE HUNTER” (2005) and “ANIMAL SPORTS PUZZLE” (2008), alongside numerous books released through his independent publishing label FLASH BOOKS. In the magazine ‘Moder—n’, launched in 2019, he published the documentary work “YAKITORI TELLER,” closely following photographer Juergen Teller. Alongside his artistic practice, he is active primarily in the music scene, having photographed album covers for musicians such as Shintaro Sakamoto, Yuta Orisaka, Jim O’Rourke, and Phew.
